Chapter 4 — Ed Ruscha and the Gas Stations Nobody Photographed

In 1963, a twenty-six-year-old artist named Ed Ruscha drove Route 66 from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles and photographed every single gas station he passed. Not the dramatic ones. Not the neon-lit cathedrals of commerce that photographers usually went for. He photographed ordinary, slightly beat-up, completely unremarkable roadside gas stations with the same flat, documentary neutrality he might use to photograph a parking lot.

He published the photos in a small book called Twentysix Gasoline Stations and sold it for three dollars and fifty cents. The art world mostly ignored it. Some critics thought it was a joke.

Then, slowly, the book became one of the most influential artist publications of the twentieth century. Ruscha had done something that felt radical at the time: he’d refused to beautify Route 66. He’d looked at the commercial landscape of America — the Mobils, the Standards, the mom-and-pop stations with hand-painted signs — and treated it as seriously as any landscape painter had ever treated a mountain.

He was saying that this was America, too. Not the postcard version. The gas stations and the asphalt and the roadside stands selling souvenirs nobody needed. The mundane beauty of a country in motion.

Ruscha would go on to become one of the most celebrated artists of the American West, but he kept returning to Route 66 — its billboards, its parking lots, its flat light at noon. He saw something there that most people drove past without noticing.

The road doesn’t care if you’re looking. But it rewards the ones who actually stop and look.
